HOW DO I JOIN THE UNION?
It all starts with an application process in our hall. An interview with our recruiter is the next step. Depending on experience, either an entrance exam, or an evaluation exam is necessary.
WHAT TYPE OF WORKERS DO YOU HIRE?
We have experienced workers in the piping industry; Journeymen Plumbers, Pipefitters, Welders, HVAC Technicians. We also have inexperienced workers learning the trade called Apprentices. We have opportunities in the pipeline industry with; Helpers and Pipeline Welders.
WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO BECOME A MEMBER?
For the apprenticeship program; a high school diploma or GED, Driver’s License and Social Security card. You must be at least 18 years of age, also need to pass the entrance math exam. There are other ways to become a member if you have experience in the industry which will require an appointment with our recruiter.
IS THE UNION LIKE A TEMP AGENCY?
No. The union provides for the worker a livable wage, health care and pensions among some of the benefits. We offer training in the industry second to none. We offer careers, not just a job!
WILL I BE GUARANTEED WORK ONCE I BECOME A MEMBER?
Due to economic conditions the construction industry fluctuates up and down. Depending on the project a worker can stay busy as the project is being built. When a project is complete we move on to the next project. An individual’s work ethic is also a factor in the security of a job.
WILL I BE WORKING IN BAKERSFIELD OR DO I HAVE TO TRAVEL?
Local 460 has work jurisdiction over Kern, Inyo and Mono counties. Therefore, you will be working in these areas. Local 460 is a chapter in the “United Association”. It is possible to work in other jurisdictions throughout the United States.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF PROJECTS I WILL WORK ON?
We build all types of projects which possess piping systems such as; refineries, co-generation plants, nuclear power plants, gas plants, compressor stations, schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, and medical facilities. In fact, we build and maintain any building or facility containing piping systems. Virtually every type of building has piping systems. We also work on pipelines of all sizes for all types of products such as oil, gas, and water.
IS THERE INFORMATION ABOUT LOCAL 460 ON THE INTERNET?
Yes. You are on the official website of Local 460 which contains a great amount of information. CAN I USE THE TRAINING CENTER WHENEVER I WANT?
Yes. Anytime our training center is open, we encourage any member to take advantage of the training available to improve their skills and abilities, obtain more certifications and increase their chances of employment by acquiring the necessary qualifications for any given job.
WHY SHOULD I BE UNION?
There are many benefits to be Union. Start with a livable wage, secure pensions and health care for you and your family. Another benefit is the training we offer to continue to improve your skills, abilities and knowledge. Also, representation for better working conditions through collective bargaining is yet another benefit to be a Union member.
